Background: Who Am I?

Welcome!

Who am I?

My name is Matt and I've never written a blog before, but I thought I should give it a try. This is going to be a collection of ramblings and musings--thoughts and wonders that I have been holding onto for the last 13 years in the public sector as an Elementary School Teacher.

I started my educationally career at the Warren County Career Center's now defunct Teacher Academy program. It was an amazing program where I got 250 document hours of observations and walked out with a completed PRAXIS binder. For those new to teaching, the PRAXIS was the old certification system to show that Teachers knew what they were doing and could get their license renewed. You know, just something extra that they had to do to prove that teachers had the knowledge and abilities to teach. I loved my time here and found that I was more than prepared for what College would throw at me.

College was at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. I'll always look back on my time there fondly  as I met some of my best friends and my wife, Kim, there.

I left Miami and went back to my hometown of Franklin and applied for a teaching job--that didn't exist. They had nothing. Nobody was hiring near where I lived and I wasn't always the most proactive person, so I started to apply at different jobs around just to make money. After being at Olive Garden all summer, I got a phone call while vacationing in Key West, Florida from the principal of one of the schools. Apparently the admins moved a veteran teacher from her classroom, where she taught for 30+ years, into a new building and new classroom. There was a huge accident; she slipped down some stairs, and retired from the hospital room.

That left me to take my phone call on a beach, and get offered a job teaching 5th and 6th grade ELA.

I'll share some stories from this time later when I reflect on my time there.

Nine years after teaching the same thing and every two years or so having the finish line moved on me, I decided to change jobs. With the help of my favorite administrator and friend, we created a STEAM position where I could travel from building to building helping all students reach their fullest creative and engineering potential. I taught STEAM for 3 years, found another rut and less control than what I wanted over my destiny. I wasn't allowed to interview for new positions. I wasn't allowed to move out of this position I created for myself. I was distraught and bored. Finding myself backed into a corner I started to look outside of Education. I found Reynolds & Reynolds.

I just started there on the 14th of August, 2023. At the time of writing, it's only been a week at the new job. I am going to update this blog once a week or so to chronicle my journey from Public to Private sector. I will be as honest as possible and forthcoming as possible with anything that I can. I hope you are willing to come along for the ride!

We Don't Need Roads

What a Month! I can't believe I haven't written in almost a month. It's crazy to me that time can go by so quickly when you aren't lesson planning. Every weekend that comes move so much faster because I don't have the same amount of time that I used to have. Instead of a theme for this post, I'm going to update my journey and see where it takes me. Buckle up.  60 days into my job and I can finally explain what I do. I build custom options in established software to convert as many prospective car buyers into sales for dealerships. I build the digital nets that dealerships use to catch their customers. It's only taken me this long to figure it out. I passed my 60 Day Review with my supervisor and apparently I'm a good match for where I am.  In the middle of September, I was tasked with bringing a new store into the ReyRey life and specifically the software that manages their customers. It has taken me that long to get all of the specifications and choic

The Cult

The Cult The people I surround myself with is 100% on purpose. I have been really bad about keeping up with my blog. So first off, I want to apologize for that because I know that people are actually reading this and somewhat enjoying it. I feel like I owe something to my readers to give them a schedule to keep me on. But dang it, if it's not a parallel to what I wanted to talk about. How many teachers have friends outside of work that are teachers? It's a phenomenon that I never really noticed until my wife brought it up. I don't know if it's just us or if this impacts other teachers: We have very few teacher friends. Hear me out, it's not like we weren't friendly with other teachers or were polite at required functions. I have taught with some wonderful human beings over my 13 years. But there aren't many that I would purposefully hang out with outside of school. There have been attempts at Friday Appetizers or other social events, but nothing that I rea

Parenting in the 8-5

And I Thought Being a Parent Was Hard Before Magic claw has no children. His days are free and easy. - Bandit Heeler It's so hard to start this one on the right note. In no way shape or form do I ever want to come across as perfect, nor do I want to be cynical. If this next statement offends you, maybe it should? Maybe it shouldn't? I feel like the best way to be is to press onward hoping that you still want to come along for the ride. PARENTING AS A TEACHER IS SO MUCH EASIER THAN PARENTING AS AN 8-5er. There. It's said. It's out in the ether.  Who would ever want a meeting with a teacher at 7:00pm on a Thursday?  Why can't you come get little Johnny right after school because he is sick? Don't you love your kid?  Why aren't these parents more involved in their kid's lives? The parents should help with homework.  You forgot your homework? What irresponsible parents you must have! What do you mean you didn't have time at home to do your 15 minutes of
